March 2007: Yukon Quest Trail (Yukon)

When flying over the Yukon Territory we were all awed by the immensity and beauty of the landscape. Suddenly it became clear to us; we were off on an adventure in a sea of mountains, which made us all a little restless. The Uncommon Journeys guides greeted us and brought us to their base camp, a breathtaking site where more than 70 dogs live.

After a day of training and preparations, we made our bags, travelled a short distance, harnessed the dogs, and rode our dogsleds for the first time, covering the distance to our first campsite. As a group, our young people had their first light winter camping experience. What a feeling when the temperature is -25o C and the only source of heat is your own body. Way to go gang!

After 3 days, the group embarked on a new trail, with a higher level of difficulty, to get to the Uncommon Journeys yurt camp. Everyone was up to the challenge, running with the dogs on the way up the hills, and braking on the way down.
